Besides offering access to testbeds and experimental infrastructures, Fraunhofer FOKUS NGNI has a strong experience in creating practical concepts, applications and prototypes. For companies and governmental administration, FOKUS is a competent partner in realizing IT projects specializing in developing multi-domain networks and interoperable, user-centric solutions. Independent from specific manufacturers, products and technologies, the institute provides a neutral platform.
Addressing current opportunities and challenges in the broadband communication market, Fraunhofer FOKUS NGNI with its competence center for Next Generation Network Infrastructures (NGNI) has become internationally recognized as testbed experts, particularly in the field of converged network infrastructures. The NGNI toolkits Open5GCore (www.open5gcore.net), OpenSDNCore (www.opensdncore.org), Open5G-MTC, OpenBaton (www.openbaton.org) enable fast prototyping, evaluation and dissemination of novel R&D concepts on a realistic comprehensive integrated testbed infrastructure ranging from access networks to service platforms. As such, Fraunhofer FOKUS operates its Berlin 5G Playground testbed, which, as part of the 5Genesis and 5G-VINNI ICT-17 facility developments, as well as funded by other third parties, provides a comprehensive platform for establishing realistic trials and pilots of 5G use cases.
The FOKUS Competence Center, Future Applications and Media (FAME) hosts all the technical know-how needed for the realization of interactive media applications: services that can be converged on multiple media platforms, and personalizable services that enable interaction with a broad array of end devices. In all their work, the experts at FAME make consistent use of Web-based technologies. Moreover, they also play active roles in standardization committees (including ETSI, the OIPF, HbbTV and W3C), support customers in the development of interoperable solutions, evaluate them and engineer showcases for visualization of their possible functionalities.
